Abigail's Birthday

One of Lani's good friends at preschool is Abigail, and Lani was invited to her birthday party on Saturday. Chris is still away so I took all three girls with the help of my cousin Steph. Lani had a great time and did NOT want to leave.

Before we set off on our grand adventure, I tried to take a few pics of the girls all dressed up. Below are the fruits of my labor. Arden was the only one who kept her eyes glued on me. (She's a bigtime mama's girl!) Ummm, anyway, I guess this type of thing is best left to the professionals.

Well, here's two out of three looking at the camera.

Finally, I made a little progress with eye contact, but of course the shot is overexposed. Ah well...

What ya got there, Sissy?

OMG, these girls are two cute. They are going to give Big Sis a run for her money!

Poor Arden. Her dress was a little tight (it's a hand-me-down from her sis), but she didn't complain and she looked adorable.

I carelessly promised there would be a bouncy house. And there was! The bouncy house gods smiled on me that day.

Cousin Stephy and Arden.

Still missing you, Daddy!!!

Is it Dieter?

Oops. This should have been uploaded to the last post. Daddy, I think you will enjoy Alana's performance!

Hi Daddy,

We miss you lots! (Daddy is hiking the Appalachian trail for a week. Just kidding. Chris is in Boston on an emergency business trip. He's been there FOREVER!) Can't wait till you come home. Geez, who knew how much it sucks to take the garbage down to the curb. hehehe Anyway, here are a few pics and videos to tide you over.

All those great toys and they just want the plastic cups. Oh well. Whatever works! (Yes, Chris makes that same face as Arden. I guess more things are genetic than we think ;-)

A little fuzzy but still as adorable as ever.

Aunty Judy with her mini gal pals. Aunty vacuumed my house and cleaned one of my bathrooms, in addition to helping with the girls. Thank you so much, Aunty! I am so glad you came to visit us this time!

Aunty Renee and Arden (her secret favorite). She is the only Aunty who willingly sits for photographs. Thank you for all the presents for Alana. And for taking her to Seaworld. We love you so much (and not for the presents -- you're just awesome)! Oh, the burrito was great!

Thank you Aunty May (camera shy like me) for cleaning and holding the babies ALL the time. I'm not sure you got to finish any meals in this house. Aunty Sheri also held many many babies. You are both so great!

Glad you guys could check out the fair and eat lots of fried food. I am told they especially enjoyed the Mexican funnel cake. Below is a photo of some other people enjoying the funnel cake. (PS Aunty May, this is not what "real" funnel cake is like. It looks like they used churro dough to make the "funnel cake")

Happy Father's Day!

Hi Dad and Grampa,

Happy Father's Day! We miss you guys!

I'll post later about why Chris isn't hear for his first Father's Day with the twins. For now, I'm posting pics for daddy. He misses his girls.

What We Say, Seaworld

"Be careful what you say"...this was never a truer sentiment for me. I'll provide a few snippets of recent conversations with Lani and you may guess why I've come to think this.

Lani: "You're killing me, mom"

Lani to me while I was outside shoveling dog poop: "You come inside right now, mom. You listen to me."

Lani to me while I had my bare foot on the dash of the car (Chris was driving): "Mom, put your shoes on. Mom, you have no shoes on."

Honestly, if it weren't so cute, I'd feel worse about it.

She's also taken to calling everyone "Bubba" because I call her and the babies Bubba. She uses this term to address the babies AND me, Chris, her babysitters, and strangers in the supermarket. It's pretty darn cute. Speaking of cute, here are a couple of group shots from this week's tap/ballet class. She insisted on wearing her hello kitty dress rather than a tutu.

Katelyn babysat for us while Chris, Lani and I hit Seaworld for the first time in a long time. The weather was superb and we were able to take in a few shows and exhibits. Chris took some really great action shots of Believe, the shamu show.

This lone shot is from the dolphin show. Chris was shocked and distressed when the "mom" fell into the water. He was quite cute about it. I assured him it was all part of the show.

7 Months Today, 6 Month Stats

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that the babies are 7 months old today.

Both girls can roll over, though Cari does it at will and Arden has only done it by chance. Both are teething but no one has popped a tooth yet. Their hair is really coming in and Arden's is darker. Cari's eyes are turning a little lighter and Arden's eyes are turning brown (I think). Neither can sit up yet, but Cari seems closer to it and I believe rolling over is a prelude to sitting. They don't have any favorite foods yet, but they do prefer their green veggies with a touch of butter. Arden has a great sense of humor, while Cari is extremely easy-going.

6 Month Stats

I also never got a chance to report the stats from their 6 mo visit. They really are impressive for two former preemies. Their pediatrician was duly impressed.

Arden...
  • weighs 16 lbs 12 oz  ~ 60 percentile
  • is 26 inches long ~ 50 percentile
  • has a 17 1/4 inch head ~ 80 percentile
Caryss...
  • weighs 18 lbs 11 oz ~ 90 percentile
  • is 28 inches long ~ 97 percentile
  • has a 17 inch head ~ 60 percentile
What does 97 percentile mean? It means that Caryss is taller than 97 percent of 6 mo old baby girls! Wha? Where did my gentle giant and future WNBA star come from?

Happier days

On Saturday I reported that the babies were fussy because they were teething. On Sunday, they woke up with really runny noses, so I guess a cold had also been brewing. Nonetheless, Sunday was a much more cheerful day for the girls. Daddy and Alana went grocery shopping while I stayed home and played with the babies. They're still not napping well, but I predict (am hopeful) this will only last a week or so.

* * *

Should I or shouldn't I? I couldn't decide if I should get a jumperoo to add to our menagerie of baby entertainment devices. I ended up buying a 2-yr old jumperoo on Craigslist for $20. The first day, Cari didn't seem too interested and didn't really bounce it. But Arden, surprise surprise, loved it right away. She likes jumping up and down, but mostly I think she loves to be standing. I'm not sure if it eases her reflux or what, but there it is. Now both girls are diggin' the jumperoo.

Thoughts on (Over) Parenting
I read an article in The New York Times predicting the end of helicoptering parenting along with its many variants of attachment parenting and so forth. I doubt it. In my early days as a new parent, I was confronted with the attachment parenting paradigm and met many diehards in the "movement" promoted by Dr. Sears. I guess I would have gotten sucked in too except that I broke the number 1 & 2 rules...breastfeed and sleep with your child till he or she is in college. Alana never took to nursing (a horrible understatement if there ever was one) and Chris and I found we couldn't sleep with a baby only a foot from our heads. I remember clearly bolting upright with a pounding chest each time she groaned or stirred. I had to move her to the nursery next door in order to get any sleep at all. I did "wear" her all the time but it was more for our salvation than anything else, since she was a very fussy baby.

Her little sisters are not fussy babies. Far from it. However, nursing was a challenge with two and didn't last long. Sleeping with two was also not ever going to happen. And this time I don't wear them...I mean, for gosh sakes, how do you wear two babies?! So once again we are the anti-attachment parents. Clearly, our kids are going to grow up to either be slackers, smoking weed behind the gym, or sociopaths, regularly parting hapless suckers from their cash. And of course they'll be fat and dumb because of all the formula. NOT! I've come to view attachment parenting, or child-centered parenting, as over parenting. I don't think it's bad per se except as an extreme dogma. Children probably shouldn't be at the center of a family for the obvious reasons. I think it's too easy to let them rule the roost and create little monsters.

As they say, I was the best mom ever. And then I had kids. The other thing I've come to realize over the last 2.5 years of actual parenting (rather than parenting dogs) is that a lot of the so-called rules: babies must sleep on their backs (to prevent SIDS), no peanut butter before age 2 (to prevent allergies), no honey before age 1 (to prevent botulism poisoning) are not rules at all. They are opinions. And more than that, they are RECENT opinions. For many years prior to the back to sleep movement, moms were told to babies to sleep on their bellies so they wouldn't aspirate their spit-up. Experts are now saying to introduce peanut butter early to prevent allergies. And let's just say that my babysitter has been feeding her son honey since he was 6 mos old. (She never read that babies can't have honey.) I think sometimes you have to use your gut in the face of all this "expert" opinion, not easy to do when you're a new parent under a lot of sleep-deprived stress. I will say that my twins have been tummy sleepers since 5 mos. I decided that the BTS program was really a BS program designed to torture babies and their parents. SIDS is sad, but it is very rare and it does not occur because a baby smothers itself. I mean, really?

Anyway, these are my 2 cents. Maybe I'll change my mind over time or maybe not.
